BIG Lantz-O-Pedia Updates (09/02/10)

Another new batch of Lantz updates featuring images and information from two Lantz cartoons previously thought to be lost: Broadway Folly and Cold Feet (both 1930)! Yikes! Thanks for spotting that typo!

I fixed this and a few other items.

The note about Sid Marcus has been corrected on the 1967 page. We previously stated that "Chilly and the Woodchopper" was his last onscreen credit --- it was actually 1972's "The Rude Intruder" --- thanks to Lantz-O-Pedia reader Charles Brubaker for spotting this.

Also, on the Miscellaneous Cartunes section, silent animation researcher Tom Stathes has notified me that, due to the fact that the Bray corporation was officially dissolved in 2008, all copyrights that were still in effect up until that date are now defunct. So, all of the Bray shorts are now public domain and I have made the proper corrections to the Lantz site with regard to this. Also corrected was the note on Lantz's work on the Col. Heeza Liar series (he worked on the series' second run beginning in 1922, not on the original from 1913-1917).

BTW why not add some information in the FAQ about the miscellaneous 8mm and 16mm Walter Lantz films like those that surface on eBay? Not the Castle or Guild-Firelight releases, but something like this:

It is always unclear whether the releases include the complete cartoon (despite the seller's description), or which cartoon is in the film due to the use of alternate titles, or the lack of titles.

"Christmas Cheers" may be another title for the 1936 "Knights for a Day".
"Red Hot Tires" might refer to "The Big Race" with Meany, Miny and Moe.
I'm not sure about "The G-Man" though.

I agree. I've been meaning to do something about the Hollywood Film Enterprises-Cine Art Film toy prints for awhile.

Notably, the mysterious "Gold Dust Oswald" that appeared listed among the 1935 Lantz releases in the first edition of Leonard Maltin's "Of Mice and Magic" (and later removed in the second) was a probably a toy print reissue of (I'm guessing) "Trade Mice" from 1938, but I'm not sure. I am positive, however, that "Gold Dust" was never an official Lantz release.

Significantly, only Lantz shorts from the mid-to-late 1930s appear to have been reissued. Here are a few others that I have spotted over the years:

"Home Run Oswald" ("Soft Ball Game")
"Oswald the Bug Charmer" ("Music Hath Charms")
"Fowl Play" ("Turkey Dinner")
"Oswald's Goofy Gopher" ("Gopher Trouble")
"Magic Gloves" ("House of Magic")
"The Quint's Birthday" ("The Birthday Party")
"Skyscraper Antics" ("The Steel Workers"; you can watch this on YouTube)

"G Man Oswald" is most likely "Case of the Lost Sheep" from 1935.

In any case, something will be added on the Lantz site soon. So, as always, stay "tooned!"

You wrote in the note for "The Unbearable Salesman" (1957) that it was Dick Kinney's last credit. His last credit was actually a Beary Family cartoon "Goose is Wild" (1963), which Kinney co-wrote with Al Bertino.

I'm guessing the Kinney/Bertino team was freelancing because their names showed up in other studios' cartoons at the same time, including the east-coast Terrytoons.
