Lantz-O-Pedia Updates (07/01/11)

Postby Pietro » Fri Jul 01, 2011 2:04 pm

Some quick updates on the Walter Lantz Cartune Encyclopedia:

1930
--- Expanded note on Snappy Salesman, regarding the possibility that the film might actually be a withheld 1929 entry.

1940
--- Note added on Knock Knock regarding Michael Barrier's speculation that the short was actually directed by Alex Lovy and not by Walter Lantz.

1953

--- Corrected error on the credits for Belle Boys.

1959
--- Note added on Space Mouse regarding the early versions of Hickory, Dickory, and Doc as seen in a rare 1958 concept sketch, courtesy of Monte and Taylor Robison.

Cartune Profiles: Woody Woodpecker
--- New image added of a storyboard panel from 1948's Banquet Busters, courtesy of Monte and Taylor Robison.

Cartune Profiles: Chilly Willy
--- New image added of a Smedley model sheet, courtesy of Monte and Taylor Robison.

Cartune Profiles: Buzz Buzzard
--- New image added of an animation sketch from 1948's Wet Blanket Policy, courtesy of Monte and Taylor Robison.

Frequently Asked Questions
--- New question added regarding the Lantz titles that we are currently missing.

There's no note on "Knock Knock".

Nice job mon cher ami, as always!
One additional anecdote that I think is worth mentioning: the Castle Films-distributed version of Wicket Wacky I once have spotted on eBay is entitled Wicky Wacky (a very minor change, though). I don't have the picture of the auction handy right now, but I'll pick it up sometime later.

Why does Mike Barrier think Alex Lovy directed those shorts? Why isn't he credited on them?

"Knock Knock" looks too well-timed to have been directed by Lovy.

"I must defend the remarkable prescience of the Hanna-Barbera writers. In the early 1960s, they dreamed up a futuristic world that seemed impossibly beyond our reach. Their creativity predicted the microwave oven, slide walks, smart phones and robot teachers. All these inventions are now routine realities of the 21st century." - Janet Waldo (LA Times, 2011)
