"DFT 101 : THe Fleischer Studios, A Musical Legacy

In celebration of award-winning Detroit-born jazz vocalist Kathy Kosins – who’ll be performing her concert of cartoon star Betty Boop’s music, “Rhapsody in Boop,” at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History this weekend – we’ve decided to whet your musical appetite with this compilation of vintage musical cartoons from the risqué Ms. Boop's home, the legendary Fleischer Animation Studios. The boop-oop-a-doop girl herself – a genuine movie phenomenon of the 1930s – will appear on screen in some of her memorable performances with Cab Calloway (Minnie the Moocher, Old Man of the Mountain), and the show will also include some Boop-less yet wonderfully surreal musical shorts that have withstood the test of time handily, demonstrating why the Fleisher Studios product was the only true rival to Walt Disney in the 1930s – and continues to give “Uncle Walt” a run for his money some eighty years later. (approx. 80 min.)"
